vhf aeriel connector query

quick question - should know the answer but don't

what type of connector is standard on a marine VHF for the antenna?

PL-259 i think, but it might be TNC??

For fixed VHF almost always PL259. For portable sets the antenna connector varies but usually TNC.

most if not all VHF have a SO259 socket so the antenna needs to be fitted wth a PL259.

There are a couple out there that have a BNC but none I know of have TNC.
TNC tends to be more for portables than fixed sets.

The only BNC socket connectors I remember were on Motorola GM300 ( or poss GM900) neither of which are normal marine base radio's. Sometimes seen as work (PMR) sets on cabin boats but not open boats. I think standard had a base set with BNC out about 15 years ago, I think it had a telephone style handset.
The TNC connectors I remember were on GPS units
I wish manufacturers would use N type as its a nicer connector, but I guess its cost and the difference between PL/SO 259 and N type makes sense and most its sort of a standard these days.

Yes the N type is a much better choice but the big thing here is most people can put a PL259 on not many can put a N type on...........well!! :0))

After seeing some PL259's that have been put on some by people who claim to know what they are doing and were paid to do it and by other muppets it amazed me that the radios worked.
Yes an N type would fox alot of people though that might be a plus.
