Navman smartcraft gateway problem

Right, any navman experts here?

I have a navman 8120 and have just had a optimax fitted..I decided to fit the smartcraft gateway( for the bling factor) but cant get it to work!

There are 3 lights on the gateway, one for power, one for talking to the smartcraft and one for for talking to the Navman; I cant get the Navman one to light up.

I have gone as per the instructions and set the Navman to talk to the Smartcraft but to no avail

Anybody offer any suggestions?

Check it's the right lead - I struggled with one of those for ages before I realised they had sent the wrong one!

Hi Cookee

Do you mean the smartcraft gateway? This is the only thing i can see that is the problem, the two lights are on - power and smartcraft but the yellow light which indicates that the gateway is talking to the Navman will not light up.
Is there a part number for the correct lead.

Cheers

They only do one that I can see; the single engine gateway which I got!(admittedly, they do a double engine one if any is being picky!!)

Hi
I have the same set up, my engine being the Mariner Opti 115. I have to say I had no problems at all.
However is there any evidence that your engine is already "talking" via the Smartcraft gauges? All the info that can be displayed on the 8120 should be accessable on the gauges when scrooling through.
If this info is present, then you can start to examine the Smartcraft gateway to the 8120, if not then the problem will lie elso where.

Just a thought, do the spare unused terminals on the hub have blanking caps on them?

There are or at least were two different gateways, and despite telling the suppliers which one I had they sent the wrong one and it didn't work at all. One is for the smallest Navman unit and the other is for the larger units.

ok, better look into that, according to the fitting instructions, and a multitude of online sites one gateway fits all the different navman models, just has to be set up differently in the head unit

so, can anyone tell me what the right model number is for a gateway to fit the 8120? I have looked on t internet and all it says is Smartcraft single engine gateway!

I have the AA 005020, I think and from what I can see this should work

Sorry to add to your woes, but I have got the AA 005020 and it works fine.

When I tried to order the 51765, and this is what I was sent!!

Navman ..... great kit but their guides and downloads just dont add up!

I assume all these engine networks are the same? The instructions are pants? :)
Just went through the same problems with Lowrance:(

I think it comes off the Tacho, though I could be wrong?

Doesnt matter where you plug it in, still doesnt work!!!

If you have a Smartcraft compatible GPS, then the Gateway plugs into the same connector as the tacho and speedo - it is a lead with a small block with some lights on it - that should be it!

Bruce B - Mercury have their own network as do the other manufacturers

Miller - what age is the engine you have?

Engine is brand new, I have got everything to show on the screen now apart from the speedo?!

I know this comes of the paddlewheel...If you disconnect the smartcraft interface, that works?!

Not that it helps but I have a 8120 with a Opti 225 and it works fine. However getting it to work was a nightmare.

Apparently there are two types of smartcraft and they are smartcraft and smartcraft (smart eh?) (in fact 1 and 2 but they are not called that - pure brilliance!)

Engines 2000 and 2001 are usually type 1 which is not compatible with the 2001 onwards smartcraft (type 2). I bought a 8120 after being told by barrus and navman that it would work only to then discover about the differences. After much mucking about and both sides saying they didn't know (their own products!) I found an excellent guy at barrus that asked me for the ECU no of my opti. This meant that in fact mine would work despite being the older engine.

All works fine now thanks the the pure brilliance of Kieron at ribshop http://www.rib-shop.co.uk/ - I also have another Navman plotter as a backup which is linked and shows all the gauges (cheaper to buy the plotter than the gauges from mercury!)

System is superb except that if you get an error message or warning (failed oil tank sender the other day) you keep getting error message every minute which cannot be turned off (unless you disable smartcraft) making the system a real pain. Imagine Windows telling you your antivirus is out of date every minute and that will give you some idea (only at 35kts).

BTW - Oil sender assy - Phoned around a load of Opti dealers who didn't carry it in stock. Phone Kieron at ribshop and he had one on the shelf, lent it to me to try and it works a treat - these guys never cease to amaze me, always helpful and know there stuff.

You know thats strange, this is the second time in 2 threads I have read about the optimax displaying an oil level sensor fault..Mine is doing it all the time, even though the tank is full right up!

Spoke to dealer, he said take the tank out and give it a good shake, that should sort it...It hasnt!

Is this a common fault?

Back to topic, all works fine now apart from speedo?!

NS005020 Single Engine Smartcraft Single engine Gateway: Use with M121/M84/660/567/467/657/650/557/550/550i/457/338

It won't work with anything else

This can be either Navman or Northstar cos the same

Miller

The M121 is the northstar code for the Navman 8120 I think you ll find

Spoke too soon.....It's doing it again but not nearly as often. Oil level sensor is working fine though...

Take it out and shake it....quality advice - almost laughable.

That was from a mercury dealer!!!

The shake it advice is because the sender can get stuck - the idea is that shaking it will unstick the sensor. Try removing the assembly and moving it manually to see if the level changes on the display - that will tell you if the sensor is at fault.

Change the speed setup on the Navman to use only the GPS speed and ignore the pitot from the engine - that should help!
