Autopilot

Who uses an autopilot on their boats and how much use does it get?

We have one on an 11m Tornado that gets a lot more use than I ever expected it to. Almost always on autopilot apart from when close inshore. It is linked to the GPS which allows us to keep a good observation, sort any bits and pieces enroute to dive site and steers a course a damn lot better than any helmsperson I have ever met!!

I am currently thinking about fitting a Raymarine S1000 on my fishing boat as it has remote control that will allow me to fish from anywhere aboard and still steer the vessel.

Hi Karl
We ordered Autopilot from Raymarine (Sept 07) but due to forthcoming update cancelled, and will wait for new version launched now.
As example this long weekend Thursday Southamptomn to Salcombe (5 hrs) then today Plymouth to Soton (5.7 hrs) the autopilot would have earned its keep. I know having sailed yachts.
Will have one before year end, allows exta time for observation.
Apparently there are two types and the gyro compass (is the one to have)
We only steered 2 courses but due to very poor vis and nothing ti aim at had to constantly watch course 'roadway' and make constant corrections.

I used a Cetrek autopilot when I circumnavigated with a Zodiac 733 - steered better than I could in almost all circumstances and allowed plenty of rest. Very helpful.....
