Whilst poking around in my console this weekend, I noticed that aerial lead for my plotter was unplugged.
I plugged it up and got a message saying that the antannae lead was shorted.
So I unplugged it again and used the boat. What I found curious was the plotter worked, seemingly perfectly.
Which makes me wonder, why bother with a gps aerial.

Nick.

Nick,

The Garmin 400 / 500 series all come with an internal antenna as standard. The external antenna connection is provided in case the unit is mounted in a more covered area and unable to get good fixes.

Sounds like yours is now working fine with the internal antenna (which will often be the case for console mounted units).

It was last year when I got it, I thought I got the external antennae version, but I have just checked the specs, and yes, it has an internal antennae.
You live and learn.
