Icom 411 v 421

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two?

They look identical to me form the Icom website :]

IIRC the 411 is the new version of the 421. It's basically the same but with some extra features e.g. 'Aquaquake' draining function and a 'favourite channel' function. I stand to be corrected though! Come on down, Mr Brooks! :D

your right, the 411 has the aqua quake function and also is £25 cheaper!!

They have also changed the audio, is sposed to be better, the display has changed as well and IMHO and that of many others is not as good as that on the M421.

The other choice could of course be the GX-1500 from Standard Horizon.
This has a bigger display than both, rotary knob for channel change which in a lot of peopls minds is far better than up and down buttons like the M421 and the M411, even more so in a RIB or open boat. The GX-1500 also has NMEA in and out to a compatible plotter thus allowing display on the plotter of DSC Distress calls and DSC Positions requests. You can also add a second station to the GX-1500 but not the M421 or M411.

Both Icom and SH offer a three year warranty.

Forgot to say the SH kit comes with the flush mount kit and a front cover for the radio in the box as standard, no pun intended.

The flush kit for the Icom is an optional extra, about £20 I think, and there is no cover option for them.

I've got the 411 and have connected it to a Garmin GPS 72. It displays GPS position but seems to frequently lose it (72 still has the position). I have to turn off the 411 and leave it for a while before it re-connects. Has anyone experienced this with this equipment or similar? Phil

=) You don't need a flush mount kit for an Icom!!! =)

1) Take the surface mount bracket
2) Cut it in half
3) Re fit it to the radio with half on either side but now with the bit that normal goes under the radio sticking out either side of the radio.
4) You can now use the bits sticking out to fasten to the inside of your console using self tappers!

I have a 421 being fed from a Garmin 12. Not had that issue, but then I only had it out once before the engine blew up, so not a particularly solid comparison... Remind me again this time next year when hopefully it will have seen some weather!

Have you checked all the connections? The garmin power / data lead doesnlt have particularly chunky cables - is it worth sitting quietly one day and wiggling them a bit to see if you can replicate the problem?

I have the 411 connected to a Garmin 420 GPS. It all seems to work fine together. You have connected the outer wires to the "-" on your battery have ? We had a discussion on CapBreizh concerning the wiring and there are some good diagrams. Take a look here as I presume you can read French http://www.capbreizh.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=635 ;)

It seems that the handheld Garmin 72 is the problem as it works fine with a Garmin fixed 152. I'm now thinking of getting the Garmin 555 (new 550) plotter. Does anyone have experience of this?

Flush mount kit now standard not option on icom radios

Finally swapped the Icom 411 for a Radio Ocean RO4800 twinned with Standard horizon CP 300i chart plotter. It recieves AIS and is capable of displaying polling requests, distress reports etc. Both are displayed directly on the plotter and it works perfectly.

I'm not sure if Radio Ocean is available in the UK but its made by Furono and was a very cost effective way of getting an AIS reciever on the boat.
