Ofcom revoke license

Hope somebody can help,

This morning I received two letters from Ofcom, the first confirmed my radio license and on checking it had a different mmsi number and call sign to the one I was advised of and entered into my radio.
On opening the second letter it advised that they had already issued my mmsi number to someone else. It also gave me a new call sign and mmsi no.

To continue using this mmsi, the letter advises, is an offence. Of course they are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused…..

INCONVENIENCE !!
I haven’t spoken to ofcom yet and hope that someone can help advise what action I can take.
My ‘inconvienience’, as I understand it, is I now need to replace my radio and all the expense that entails – am I right in thinking entering an mmsi number is a once in a lifetime operation on a radio or can it be changed???

1. Can an mmsi number be changed on a Navman 7200?
2. If not, do I have and legal rights to Ofcom replacing my radio

What gets to me is it has taken ofcom months to get these letters to me during which time the boat has been on the water many times with the wrong info on board and all the potential risks associated.

As I understand it the only way that a MMSI can be change in a radio is by returning it to the manufacture. (spelling!!!!)

I am sure if Jon Brooks from this site sees this post he will tell you the best way to go.

Easiest just to contact the dealer you bought it from or Plastimo/Navimo directly on 01489 778850. You shouldn't need to replace the radio though - the MMSI entry is not completely irrevocable.

You might want to send an invoice to Ofcom for any carriage costs etc with copies of the two letters. Don't expect there's any chance of getting paid, but you might provoke a reponse at least.

Your are not the first person this week to have this problem.
One of my customers has agreed with Ofcom that will cover any out of pocket expenses either postage or getting an engineer to visit your boat to put it right.

This may have to be the case with some instals where it is not parctical to remove the radio.

We applied for were advised of and input our mmsi no in January and it has taken them until April to advise us of the mistake.
Interesting to hear of others with similar problems.

Most radios sold here in the States can have an MMSI entered twice before needing some sort of hard manufacturers reset

Sorry to disturb everyone by reviving a dormant thread; but I just thought you'd like to know that this whole thing is still ongoing and is probably a bit bigger than first thought...

A nice lassie from Ofcom phoned me yesterday about the MMSI number on Bennan. She seemed quite pleased when I told her that the vessel doesn't currently have a DSC VHF, so she could re-allocate the number to the other boat with the same number. She phoned back a little while later to find out when our boat was first issued with an MMSI "as the first one was in 1999".So that's OK, ours was 2001. Which still leaves another boat to be aged - apparently "our" number had been issued three times :(

The lassie from Ofcom said she was only there on contract for "database cleansing". Oh well, at least someone is doing something constructive about all this :thumbs:
