Navman 7100 VHF and 5380 plotter don’t talk!

Hello all

A quick question in case anyone else has had this problem. I’m trying to get our Navman 5380 plotter to send GPS data to the 7100 VHF/DSC radio we have – no joy! :( . However it was a great day to be messing around in the Marina yesterday, reminded me of the Med!

The 7100 does not use Navbus (sadly) but it does accept NMEA in (the green or yellow wires – one says GPS+ one GPS-, the manual says both are ‘GPS in’). There is a single NMEA out (white wire) from the 5380. Connect up the two wires and it should work!! I have enabled NMEA out on the 5380. The baud rate for both devices seems to be similar but the VHF continues to say “no GPS information”…

Any tips or other useful ways to tell if the 5830 is actually sending data or if it’s the radio that is not happy?? Do I need to ground the NMEA circuit maybe?

Thanks to all……

On the navman website there is a useful pdf all about connectivity between the units, I think it has troubleshooting and wiring schematics.

www.navman.com

Got this off there:

· Connecting VHF 7100, 7200 to a GPS

NMEA OUTPUT + from third party instrument, connect to yellow wire (NMEA IN) on NAVMAN VHF7100/7200
NMEA Output – from third party instrument, connect to Green (NMEA -) on Navman VHF7100/7200

Thanks for that tip, just found this posting by Biggles last Sept:

From that is looks like I need to ground the "NMEA -" on the VHF and connect the "NMEA +" on the VHF to the "NMEA out" on the plotter... will give that a go and see if we have any joy....:D

Have also e-mailed Navman..

Be warned - Navman sometimes get the colours mixed up in the books - my Navman 3100 fuel computer wouldn't accept the GPS data - until I swapped the wires around!!!

I have the same problem, and its be driving me nuts. I'll try swapping the wire over at the weekend and with a bit of luck it will all work.

Thanks for the tip.

Navman replied to my message within 24 hours with a full breakdown of the necessary wiring. See the picture below. It looks like the grounding of the NMEA off the VHF was what I was missing – shame this same picture was not in the manual… :)

Bear in mind even on their web site they often mix up the yellow and white wires!!!
