Hey folks, just looking for some comments to help me decide what new VHF i will buy
Been looking at the Icom range for a while but now I have seen a cobra one
The models are :
COBRA MARINE DSC WATERPROOF VHF RADIO/TRANSCEIVER MR75
ICOM M421 VHF Transceiver with DSC
Any comments will be most appreciated

Ignore them both!!
Go for the Standard GX1500 (no, I don't sell them) - flush or bracket mount included, remote features mic, very clear screen and easy setup and MMSI directory maintenance.
And being Standard, it should last for ages....
(That'll be a fiver please Mr. Brooks :D )

I would ignore the Cobra right away - I don't think they are anything like as rugged or water resistant as they need to be.
Both the Icom M421 and the Standard GX1500e are very durable radios, and will survive everything that you can throw at them. Of the two, I'd choose the Standard (not that I'm biased!) because it has a clearer screen, and the menu system is light years ahead of the Icom. It also has rotary dials for Squelch, Volume, and Channels, a real bonus with wet gloved hands.
See here: http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19391 for a special offer!

dont bother with the cobra my mate put one on his rib and it only lasted six weeks due to salt water inside it.

Odd-the cobra on my sr4 went through 3 serious stuffings and was fine when I sold it.
I've got the Icom 421 now. It's far easier to use than the cobra and sounds better.

Im looking to get a handheld VHF for the summer as we may change the console for next session and seems a waste to get one mounted. Anyone got a preference or advice on the makes and design?!
Evolution came with a Cobra and it never worked for me. I changed it for a Standard from Jimbo which Im very pleased with.
