It really depends on your situation and how you use the radio. Assuming that you can hook the radio up to a GPS via NMEA so the GPS can send the lat/long to the radio, then DSC is a great safety feature. It not only automatically relays your position in a distress situation but the coastguard can lookup your MMSI and obtain info on the vessel and emergency contact etc. Other DSC equipped boats in range will automatically receive the DSC distress call and position will be shown on receivers screen. DSC is also really usefull for instigating calls with another boat owner if you know their MMSI. Without the GPS link, DSC is still usefull as it still indetifies the boat via MMSI and you have the option to enter the position manually but it's not so easy in a distress situation. Also woth noting that if you don't already have a GMDSS license, you need to get an addendum to existing VHF license before using a DSC set. You also need to get an MMSI from the radio licensing folks (which is free). Sorry if you already knew all that - was trying to give as broad info as possible! three-rex 13 October 2006, 22:26 I know nuffink - got a VHF bundled with the Fletcher that I just got rid of - upgrading to a rib, and uncertain whether to reinstall or get new - all info gratefully received. three-rex 17 October 2006, 12:08 Applied to the budgetary committee last night (aka SWMBO) Just told boat-shop to put me a new DSC radio in. :) Jon Brooks 17 October 2006, 12:45 I would always recomend DSC if you have the budget. Only two compaies now make stand alone VHF's with a DSC add on. Having the option of hitting the red button in an emergecy as got to add peace of mind when your out at sea, it does for me. Apart from anything else, it's newer electronics so should be more reliable and more likely to produce 25W. |
