Back up GPS - wrist mounted ?

I'm in the market for a back up GPS for my rib. Got my eye on a wrist mounted Garmin Foretrex 201. Has anyone got / used one. - Any feedback appreciated.

Yes! Mine arrived about a week and a half ago (ordered it from the States from this chap http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZusaflexQQssPageNameZSTR KQ3aMEWAQ3aMESOI) and I have been well impressed. Feels nice and solid, very easy to use (although I think the up and down buttons are the wrong way round - that's probably just me!) and it's generally a nice bit of kit.

Easy to interface with my MapSource GPS Software on the PC too.

If you come to the cruise on Sunday you're welcome to have a play... :cool:

Don't like that one anyway. Looks poncy. Like mine, it's green and everything. And has buttons. Wouldn't catch me with one of those. Definitely not my thing. Off to play with my "old hat" gadget now...

I used it (in good weather) to cross to Ireland and back from the Isle of Man - compass pointer to waypoint perfectly readable at a slightly bouncy 30 Knts although in true boy racer fashion it's mostly set to ground speed!

Pop it off to use on the bike, kayak, walking etc.

That new one with the wrap around looks like you can't mount it on a flat surface...

I just love portable gadgets which you don't have to wire in.

I use a Garmin eTrex Vista C in the Philippines loaded with Blue Chart for that area (which is UK Hydrographers chart).

It is ideal for speed data and course etc. Very useful from positioning as warning when approaching sudden shallows (inter-tidal zone) which are common due to coral/reefs.

It operates OK in a waterproof pack (DiCAPac) through which it can be read.

Thanks folks, i'll have a go at one of them. I've got a Garmin 188C for my main unit, but now that my confidence is growing and I'm going further out alone, its something to give me that extra reassurance that I can at least know where I am if the main unit goes down.

thanks for the offer mate - cant make the cruise on Sunday tho, I'm with Hornsea Inshore rescue and we train on Sunday mornings. Unless I'm on hol's I try & stay commited to the cause...

I've got my eye on one on ebay - Did you need the additional kit with this unit being from the USA - are they on 110v over there ? - would I need an AC inverter to charge it up over here ? I havent got a clue - its all physics to me !!!
