Garmin 178cJizm 22 September 2006, 08:28 Anyone got one of these? opinions appreciated. bedajim 22 September 2006, 09:39 Hi I've got one it's great, but I think it lies about there being any fish under the boat as I've never caught any and it says there are loads under the boat Yes I'd buy another P.S. I've got two data cards for the south coast if you want one at a good price James bedajim 22 September 2006, 09:41 sorry hit the key twice Jizm 22 September 2006, 11:06 Yes will definately be interesteed if I buy the unit, thanks. jwalker 22 September 2006, 11:10 Yep, it's working well, it does everything it's big brothers do. I'm using it primarily as a sounder and the screen size is fine for that but a bit small for navigating, still usable though. Mine has the internal antenna option and it is partially screened by metal structure but it never fails to lock on. One odd thing, it doesn't appear to have a field on any page which can give your position in Long/Lat. The position of the cursor can be got by pressing a cursor key. Whether that first press of the key actually moves the cursor from your present position, hence giving an error, I don't know. I can't find any reference to it in the manual. Got it from the US. £278 plus VAT. There appeared to be no duty charged on the customs documents, just VAT. Paul 23 September 2006, 19:08 Very happy with mine. matt h 23 September 2006, 19:19 had 2 now, good units, easy to use, fishfinder bit is so powerful, it will make seaweed look like fish on the finder, go for it, bernithebiker 25 September 2006, 06:57 yep, this is a good little unit. I've been using mine for 3 months now, and it works great - I have the external antenna, but not sure I really need it. I also have it bracket mounted, as even though my boat comes out of the water each time, I don't trust tealeaves if I've just moored up to go to the pub......... The only thing I would say is that if I could do it all again, I would go for a larger screen, as I like to have it in split screen nav/depth mode, and then navigation can be a bit hard due to small size. Oh yeah came from US, why pay double? steve b 25 September 2006, 16:28 Anyone got one of these? opinions appreciated. Problem with water under the screen if left on for a few hours it goes I intent taking it out and replaced (still under 12 months old) otherwise all ok!! steve jyasaki 25 September 2006, 21:07 jwalker; I think (not sure of that particular model), that you can select overlay data on one of the options screens. You should be able to select Lat/Lon from there, and superimpose it on the chart. Look up Change Data Fields and Change Numbers at http://www.garmin.com/manuals/494_OwnersManual.pdf jky jwalker 25 September 2006, 23:04 Yeh, I looked for that but Lat/Long is not in the list of fields which can be displayed. It is like that on my 2010c and it is also a standard field on the satellite position page. Page 9 of the manual shows how you can get it using the cursor position and you could mark a waypoint to find it but that's a hassle. I've played with the cursor and if the button is pressed just once and not held for any length of time, the cursor seems to appear at the current location. Thanks anyway. cleverdim 26 September 2006, 11:46 Good morning, I have 178c and i had the same problem trying to find the lat/lon position. Well, it is only works when you select large or huge data fields numbers. Look the note at the manual at page 31. Dimitris jwalker 26 September 2006, 12:13 Well found Dimitris, I am using medium fields. I've just tried large and it is, indeed, available in the large size. |
