Get a chart and a compass and then you will know if your arse or your head are pointing North. If you think that a GPS thingy is going to solve your problem them you will be wasting your money. Without sounding like a pompous preacher ( sorry !! ) if you are going to go any distance you should really know how to navigate using only chart and compass and then upgrade to electronic GPS while keeping the chart and compass in reserve for the time when your electronic GPS inevitably packs in!! I think that keeping a chart of your area on board is a SOLAS regulation but I might be wrong! jyasaki 27 August 2006, 22:51 I'm all for the chart and compass thing, but that only works if you have a decent idea of where you are, or can see something to relate to. For one of those no-idea-where-I-am, lost-in-the-fog, night, or way offshore incidents, I'd opt for a good GPS unit (and a good VHF, but that's another story.) jky |
