car & rib GPS

The wife wants GPS for her car. I want GPS for the Rib.

Which handheld should I plum for that will do both jobs?. Sorry I have no idea about GPS.

I have a tight budget of aprox £150. Garmin 72-76 any users out there?

Sorry mate but you are going to struggle to get what you are after in one unit for that much cash.

The Garmin Quest is a nice duel use unit but about £280 inc. but the screen is a bit small to be of any real use on a RIB. Not bad in the car and it is water proof.

You will not manage to get any voice style road navigation from the 72 etc.

Could you not get your good lady to run say tom tom on her phone. Say Nokia N70 and then you get a Garmin for the RIB?

You could get a cheap IPAQ off Ebay - also a bluetooth gps. Put them in waterproof bags. You can run TomTom on the road which is the best - also you can get all the charts etc for sea use. older type screens on IPAQs are better for direct sunlight use.

Do you know where I can get the sea charts for gps? I have a HP iPaq, with gps built in, and have Tom Tom 5 for it - I looked before on the net, but couldnt find the marine maps for it...

Garmin 76C... I got one recently from GPSW.co.uk (I think!). It was at a ridiculously low price, and I think a few other people on here did the same.

The "Unit" cost about a £100. This comes with a base map - that includes road navigation at the town-to-town level using main roads. (although not necessarily the most logical route is given!) This unit has the capability of loading a detailed street level map (more money!) or marine maps (even more money).

I'm not sure if marine map and street level mapping can both be loaded at the same time. instruction manual says check with garmin as it is dependent on the versions being used (or something like that!).

Screen isn't really big enough for chart plotter use at speed - but seems to fit my needs - speedo, nmea out for when i can afford a dsc, location and even the basic map is not that bad as a very rough guide (although I would have driven over an island last weekend trying to find mdt if it had been foggy or anything!).

If you can get one for this price it would be worth considering.

[edit - mdt is correct the 76c doesn't do voice nav. but it will beep to tell you there is a turn approaching and on the correct setting show text/arrow etc to tell you where to go]

Memory map do them - nautical charts and os maps etc - brilliant. Also aerial photos so you can see the roads you are actually driving on!!!
