Garmin 3010c

Hi

I am looking at purchasing a Garmin 3010c for my new Rib, as after a large screen GPS. Does anyone on here have one already, if so how do they find it. Played with one for about an hour or so on the weekend and found it reasonably easy to use as most Garmin stuff is.

Any negative/positive comments would be great thanks.

I have the 2010c which is the forerunner of the 3010c. The unit is fantastic and the screen ( 10") is excellent. I have had it since 2002 and its never gone AWOL ./or wrong. Garmin back up is pretty good as well. Answers to problems withing 24 hours

However:

1. Be shure to register with Garmin.
2. It uses Mapsource - which is about the best BUT extra chart areas come
at a price. ( anything up to 200 quid)
3. It is not cheap..

I used a 2010c on a boat I rebuilt in Hawaii and it was amazing! Totally easy to install and most of the software is easy and intuitive to use - and no problem seeing in bright sunlight.

I'm installing the 3210 bundle on a boat currently and am eager to see the changes...the much expanded built-in chart, plug and play features, video options, and the radar overlay sound very promising. As I'm sure you know, this network is easily expandable and if possible I would recommend it over the 2010 if you have that choice.

Please have a play around with the Raymarine as well - I always used to be a big Garmin fan but my Raymarine c80 is great. I still carry around my old trusty Garmin handheld as backup though!!!

I have a 3010c ....the only problem I found was with the new g2 charts
the small charts worked fine but the large chart didnt work, a phone call to garmin sorted that out. its easy to use and very clear, also the video input I use as a fish finder.

Bloody hell - didn't notice - last time I looked it was 3,000!!! Well spotted.

GED - dont you know a guy called Codprawn- comes from the same neck of the woods.. he is the one with a 8m blue rib, with a 200 suzuki stuck over the end.And Codders - your rib measures 2.8 at the widest and weighs wet at some 2800 kgs?? Dont believe it...

That weight was with the trailer which weighs about 1000kgs on it's own - it's a triple axle job. The boat is actually 8.8m long and 2.9m wide - I measured it to be sure!!! Of course in the harbour it's an 8m......

I would imagine codders, that 2.9 wide boat on a twoed trailer is on the border of being illegal in the UK. I understand that the max , allowed wideth for a towed caravan in the UK is 2.3 meters and an HGV is 2.5.
I may be wrong as have not kept up with my UK regs for some time now.. but please enlighten.
Dont forget if you go commercial, you will need a tachograph and will be limited to driver's hours and regs. and speed.

Why do you need a three wheel trailer- that I would have thought unnecessary?. You could have two axles taking 1500 kgs each and loose an axle at 200 kgs?? The boat seems overtly heavy??. Mine is 9 meters,cabin,seats ,2*50galllon tanks , box on the front, 2*250 yams and
yet weights with 500 liters, 2200 kgs. train weight is 2800 kgs , yet is stable as heaven even at 80 mph.

Anyway to contradict such a renown expert-- you know where you can put your Raymarine???????????

correct its a jrc radar had it about 4 years now, used it once in the fog!!!!

What I want to know GED is how you managed to get a satellite signal inside Ians workshop :D

As I understand it 2.3/2.55m is the maximum width of a trailer on UK roads, but 2.9m is the maximum width of the load without prior approval.

Attached codship with 3 dims highlighted: width of load (yellow), width of trailer (red), internal beam (magenta) - the latter is 1.8m according to prosport.

I did not NEED a 3 axle trailer - as I was very kindly lent one by John Price of Quinquari I was not going to argue. As a plus point the outfit was SO stable and easy to tow I will be buying exactly the same sort of trailer - the extra security is well worth having. You could have 2 punctures and just take the wheels off!!!

It IS 2.9m so no probs!!! Yup boat is standard Prosport. Makes it very stable - tubes just about kiss the water at rest with full tanks. As soon as you are on the plane they are clear.

Don't want to put 2 engines on the back - never mind 3 - it is so well balanced for wave jumping - lands nice and level. May invest in a 300hp at some stage though!!!
