jwalker 31 March 2006, 23:24 In the light of Tim's thread, I thought it might be an idea for folk to mention common places they know of for mobile speed cameras to be active. Wholly in order to ensure as many folk as possible obey the speed limits you understand.
I'll start with a few Scottish ones.
Edinburgh bypass westbound 50mph section. Mobile van frequently on left a few hundred metres before the end roundabout.
Glencoe -> Rannoch moor. Laggangarve -> Glen Etive junction. Car over brow on left (east/south bound) after straight before Etive junction and bridge with arches. Shoots both ways. Fast road.
Glencoe -> Glencoe village. Car in entrance to forestry campsite. Shoots both ways. Fast, straight road.
Bridge of Orchy. Van in layby on straight west of hotel. Looks like a tourist.
A85 east of Crianlarich. Newish section of road by Loch Lubhair. Various hidden places. Particularly active on motorbike days.
A85 same as above. In layby at Loch Dochart next to food van. Easily missed because the layby is busy.
A82 (A85 continuation) west of Crianlarich. Stripes on road for measuring speed. 2 places.
A82 further west on straight about a mile before Tyndrum. Speed stripes on road.
codprawn 01 April 2006, 01:24 And whilst on the subject....
WHY don't people flash their lights to warn other motorists??? I ALWAYS do but nobody else seems to bother!!! Either people are too blind to see the hidden vans or else they are scared in case they are doing something illegal - government conditioning again!!!
South Wales is prob the worst area in the country for camera vans. I know from when I used to drive almost 2,000 miles a week all over the UK.
M4 between Swansea and Newport - in particular bridges near Porthcawl.
Fabian Way- A483
A465 heads of the valleys road near Resolven.
A48 near Carmarthen
Remember most of these sites are shown on the various speed camera databases but of course they are just possible sites - not where the van actually is!!!
with the flashing light thing… the French are really good for looing out for each other.
I did it the other week to a guy who flashed me back and gave me a “internationally recognized hand signal” hope he got done.
And yes JW know about the one on the 50mph part of the Edinburgh by-pass. The sods got me there. And I spotted the van miles off god only knows the range of the things.
hannah 01 April 2006, 15:45 Road angels work best, was in car once and it beeped 9 times in the space of about 10 minutes along a motorway
lol

Yes but it only tells you where the vans MIGHT be - not where they actually are!!!
And TomTom on an Ipaq or autoroute on a laptop with a speed camera database is even better.
tcwozere 01 April 2006, 17:20 A database, (tomtom, roadangel, etc,) is as only as good as the peeps who update the database..
Bigmuz7 01 April 2006, 17:51 Just Bought a road Angel II, detects Lasers (mobile units) forward facing and rear facing as well as having GPS position for fixed units. Used to have a road Pilot but database was mince, had a bolt on radar detector, but went off at traffic lights crossings etc. Angel is working well so far

By the time you have detected the laser it is already too late. You usually only pick it up when you have been hit!!!
Bigmuz7 01 April 2006, 18:05 Well I'm waiting to find this out, I dont really speed as a rule, its just there to watchout if i'm not paying attention momentarily. I'll report as to its effectiveness. Anyway, the speed the camera measures is an average through the pickup range, so if you are fast enough, and its safe to do so, stand on the brakes and it might just work, we'll see, but its got to be better than nowt
jwalker 01 April 2006, 18:16 Bigmuz7. where were you when you were shot?
randski 01 April 2006, 18:34 :] For God's sake just keep to the speed limit

As you are a driving instructor could you tell me if it is now the policy to teach people not to indicate right on a roundabout but to indicate left to leave? The reason I ask is nearly everyone seems to be doing it - even traffic cars.
Also there seems to be a massive increase in the number of people who will turn right on a roundabout in the left hand lane.
widey 01 April 2006, 19:38 :] For God's sake just keep to the speed limit
wot if they decide to make a 20 knot speed limit in coastal areas, or worse (as they've done at Lake Windermere) ?
Also there seems to be a massive increase in the number of people who will turn right on a roundabout in the left hand lane.
Yeah - what the f**ks that all about. I know several roundabouts where the lane markings have now been changed so you can turn right in the left lane and can't got straight over in the right lane because there were so many accidents where people in the right lane crossing the roundabout collided with people in the left lane turning right!
Polwart 01 April 2006, 19:41 When they decide to have a man walking in front of you with a red flag will you just accept that as well???
have you actually done anything constructive to make your complaints known to your elected representatives... or are you just going to blame blair and the govrnment as usual. i know the rib net membership is diverse but i havent noticed any mp's or councellors amongst us so you wasting your time moaning here...
randski 01 April 2006, 19:44 When they decide to have a man walking in front of you with a red flag will you just accept that as well???
I will campaign to make sensible laws but until then I accept the law of the land

Again, even if it's a bad law campaign to change it but don't think you're above the law

Bigmuz7 01 April 2006, 19:56 This is the point, in 22 years of driving this is a first offence, fast cars, towing, and HGV driving I've allways been alert to the road. Yes I'm bitter, and technology has caught me out . I dont care who you are, every one speeds sooner or later, its inevitable. Guesse I should accept that I'm gettin old, hehe, but watch out you guys, lots of us need our license for a living, and its getting easier each day to lose it ((was that ok codders, lose, (hehe)) I pride myself in being aware of the road, its conditions, and the possible prats around me that could land me in it if I wasn't looking over my shoulder, and checking that my next move is ok. So Randski when you get yours, don't say I didn't warn you. And if your one of those who do 20 everywhere , i'm having my headlamps fitted with pop up RPG's :D

Of course everbody speeds but if you're stupid enough to get caught - pay the consequencies.
Bigmuz7, with over 30 years of experience as a HGV/Roadcraft instructor I've never been convicted of speeding so you obviously weren't alert enough
:D
I also drive a very fast (Jap) car
Kernow 01 April 2006, 20:19 I also drive a very fast (Jap) car
Oh cheers mate, didn't tell me you'd traded the TOYota :D
Bigmuz7 01 April 2006, 20:23 So are you saying a blue van at 200yds .. no markings looks like an obvious speed trap, I dont think so, you'll have your day sir, unless you have been modified by cyberdyne systems your luck is out. I will pay the consequences, I post these issues just to help and serve everyone else who wants to preserve their ticket. This current Government stops at nothing to swell its coffers, and as a responsible road user and company director who ploughs a lot into uk plc I resent dirty underhand tactics to whelch cash from law abiding careful people. If you have read the previous thred on this topic, I believe the camera beamed me 'outside' the zone, but I , nor anyone else can prove that. I am not a speeder, 22 years proves that.

If you were caught outside the zone then i really hope that you can go to court and prove itI don't wish anyone to be convicted wrongly. But again, IF you were breaking the speed limit, then take the consequencies.
codprawn 01 April 2006, 20:33 Explain yourself?
I DID - I wanted to know if people are being taught differently now?
I was always told at a roundabout if the exit you wish to take is past the 12 O'Clock mark then it is a right turn and you should indicate right.
I can understand people who are just too lazy to indicate at all but I can't see why so many people are not bothering to indicate right but ALWAYS indicate left to leave!!! It is bad enough on normal roundabouts but on a mini roundabout when some idiot just turns right in fron of you when you thought they were going straight on it's suicidal.
randski 01 April 2006, 20:35 I DID - I wanted to know if people are being taught differently now?

Too true Codders, they ought to bring out a camera to catch people at it :D

Or even better get rid of the cameras and get more traffic cops back on the roads - and get them to crack down on lane hogs etc - people seem to think we drive on the right these days!!!
Alice 01 April 2006, 20:53 Oh cheers mate, didn't tell me you'd traded the TOYota :D
No, he's still got the Starlet Jeff. I saw him hurtling along the Indian Queens by-pass in it last night. The prob was that, when he flashed his lights at me, all the spots coming on combined with the big stereo put such a draw on the alternator it all but stopped the thing! I saw Sue and Bob nearly nut the windscreen. The Chicken Premier and MacD's strawberry milkshake went everywhere!! :D

You are quite right on this one… the boys in blue can and do make judgement call… I was stopped a few weeks back late at night on the Edinburgh by-pass (yes in the same 50 limit I was done previously by a Van with a camera) I spotted the police car coming up the slip road and I could not be bothered to heave on the anchors and just look guilty etc.
So got pulled over and after a short chat I admitted to doing more than 50 but did not agree with is suggestion that one was over 80mph. but after I pointed out that it was a nice night, and that not one other car had passed us as we stood there chatting. And he agreed that I was hardly being a danger etc. was told to go easy.
So more police less cameras…..
roycruse 02 April 2006, 09:43 They also have the power to be complete Wan*ers - and in my experience usually are. (but maybe that's just Cornish Police).
I once got pulled in to a road block that had been setup and given a ticket, on the spot fine and a producer for "misuse of fog lights". I didn't even know there was such an offence.
It was run to the sun weekend (http://www.runtothesun.co.uk/index831545.html) (hense the roadblock) and they decided to give a local guy in a nearly new hyundai grief whilst allowing all the custom modified (and probably barely legal) cars drive by. Wan*ers - I hate em all !!! - I wish they could all be replaced by machines - at least you know where you stand - and don't become victim of a guy in a bad mood cause his wife didn't shag him the night before etc...
MikeCC 02 April 2006, 13:53 I did it the other week to a guy who flashed me back and gave me a “internationally recognized hand signal” hope he got done.
Yes - you can't do some people a favour.
I was sat behind someone dropping off at the railway station the other day and gave them a quick beep.
He did look rather sheepish when he'd stopped swearing at me and realised what I was pointing at were the keys he'd left in the boot lock.

Aye they 'dont like it up up em Sir' Corporal Jonsey style. Truth is between equipment failures, inapropriate useage, and dubious recordings & read outs, councils not putting film in the statics cos they cant afford it, etc , its by and large a lottery whether you get done or not... What a shite way to have to drive in this country, God help any tourist who falls foul of these hap hazard , make em up as you go along rules. If we cant decide where the boundaries are, what chance has anyone. Well thats it no one does. Take your lucky (or should that be square) penny out with you next time just in case (And prey they man on the trigger got his end away the night before) hehe :D happy motoring
Polwart 02 April 2006, 19:03 God help any tourist who falls foul of these hap hazard , make em up as you go along rules.
Actually since they don't have UK licences they don't get the points, and I know a spaniard with a spannish licence who has been stopped twice send in their licence and cheque etc and get it all sent back after a long delay with a letter saying they were unable to process it!
Bigmuz7 03 April 2006, 06:46 Well thats the answer , we all need moustaches and a sombrero, with a straw donkey in the back seat and we've cracked it. I'm Miquel btw :D

It is so true though. All you have to do is put foreign plates on your car - the DVLA database won't know what the hell they are - when you drive past a SPECS camera it will just ignore you. The police won't bother stopping you cos it's too much like hard work - too much paperwork involved and they won't be able to speak your language.

There are a few avenues that you can take (depending on the circumstances) to, legally, overcome the difficulty of being done of speeding. Using hairspray, lying or pretending that you are Spanish are not amongst them.
i cannot find a grinning smilie, where are they?
ian parkes 03 April 2006, 23:42 Camera van top end of Cornwall west bound A38 about 5 miles after crossing the tamar bridge on first dual carriagway in layby just after Castle Motors , the car sales with the fighter Jet on a stand outside
Its there nearly every weekend in summer .
