What sort of speed can I expect?ollyit 30 November 2005, 12:54 From a 2.8 metre Zodiac SIB, with a 2hp 2stroke evinrude with an inflatable floor please? thanks guys  :D Richard B 30 November 2005, 12:58 Probably not even fast enough to plane :( codprawn 30 November 2005, 13:09 From a 2.8 metre Zodiac SIB, with a 2hp 2stroke evinrude with an inflatable floor please? thanks guys  :D 5mph from what I read in a yachtie mag the other day. Hugh Jardon 30 November 2005, 13:16 i had a bombard ax 3 with a 2 hp yamaha, the daughter loved it but is was oh soooooooooooo slllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooowwwww wwwwwwwwww. basically it will be so slow you will be amazed, if you had a 4 or 5 hp you might be able to get it to plane if the boat had a flat bottom. but an 8hp or 9.9 would be a lot better. 2hp are very light though!! so 3 to 5 mph down wind down stream down hill !!! ;) oh and when you open it up....it just gets louder!! :D it defo wont plane trust me ignore codders as he only knows what he has read in a magazine.......i have actually owned one of these awsome powerful 2hp engines and i know all about em, the acceleration and performance, breathtaking. fuel economy is quite good, about a cup full will last you a week!! only sold it as i could swim faster...upgraded to a 4hp!!! Searider 30 November 2005, 13:41 When I were a lad (1980s) we had an Avon redstart with a 2hp Evinrude. About 9' long, wooden floorboards (so had a flat bottom) and with the bolt on type outboard bracket. The floorboards were braced by some non-standard longitudinals and the outboard bracket could be prevented from wrapping itself under the boat by lashing this to an eye in the after board On flat water if you locked the steering straight ahead and steered by transferring your weight or by kicking the tiller, whilst lying down on the inflatable seat, it would plane. Just. A mate had a "GB" inflatable of about the same size but with a hard transom. With floorboards. That would plane easily with his Merc 2.2hp. Went even better with the restrictor plate taken out of the carb - 3.3hp instantly for no expenditure. Small boats are fun. It's all down to correct weight positioning, weight vs. power and finally bottom shape. Three years at University studying Naval Architecture just confirmed what I knew when I was ten :eh: ollyit 30 November 2005, 14:05 Thanks guys! :) some good opinions there, keep em coming good or bad  Rodan 30 November 2005, 14:05 Parents had a 3m SIB with a 2hp, very slow and only any good as a tender (but lots of fun). I used to have a mirror dinghy which I rigged with 2 x 2hp yammies. Once I had remembered to plug the centerboard casing it was great. Could turn on a 6 pence (engines were controlled individually). Progressed to a Zodiac 4m with old evinrude 35 - faster (felt very fast) but turning was very poor. A friend had one of those hexagon shaped avon SIB's (under 3m) with a 15 and that was downright dangerous. My guess is you would get about 6kts Nasher 30 November 2005, 14:11 Olly Why? :eh: Nasher ollyit 30 November 2005, 14:18 I bought a bargain evinrude 2hp :) possbile sib in the pipeline, just for a laff  Mollers 30 November 2005, 14:37 Probably not even fast enough to plane :( Are you 'avin a larf?!!! It'll be barely fast enough to make headway!! A mate of mine has a 2.8m Wetline with an inflatable keel bag with a 4hp Johnson on it. That'll only just plane with coaxing with a kid driving. :D We have a 2.3m Quicksilver, I put a 5hp Tohatsu on that. Now that was fun! It was a little wave jumper.:D Mollers 30 November 2005, 14:41 2hp would be plenty behind a polystyrene surfboard! ollyit 30 November 2005, 14:44 i get the drift!!! :) ADS 30 November 2005, 14:51 Ollys, heres a post I made a while a go: http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5630&highlight=bombard+ax2 I ve had a Suzy 2, Honda 2hp 4 stroke and a Yamaha Malta 3hp. Had them all on a bombard 2m SIB and now got an Avon R280 air deck. With the 2hp Suzuki on the AX2 it just planed with a light person in it, 10 knots gps. But you have to remember the Ax2 is tiny and very light, this was also on flat water. You can have a lot of fun with a 5hp+ on an air deck, unless your 20 stone in which case it won't plane. Heres an AX2, tiny!: http://www.boat-finder.com/images/boats/index_big/copy6463idx_1.jpg Alex ollyit 30 November 2005, 15:02 nice one thanks ads :) dont worry not getting rid of the searider :) Hugh Jardon 30 November 2005, 15:23 my ax3 with a 2 on it would never plane even if you performed unnatural acts on it but with the 4hp it would plane if you leant over the front a bit to get it started if i put me 2 yr old in the ax3 with a 2hp it might have planed but the ax2 and 3 have flat bottoms so once you get up on the plane it is like steering a tray!! stedj 30 November 2005, 15:54 hi i have a 2.8 avon rover fiber glass bottom but quite flat and a yam 2 st short shaft 9.9 1 up [14 stone] flys dont know how fast but fast.2 up 26 stone about as fast as u can ride a bike 3 up nearly 40 stone still planes  Alice 30 November 2005, 16:10 I prefer long shafts myself. Mollers 30 November 2005, 16:30 I prefer long shafts myself. Cheeky minx :p You need to slip on down to Cornwall, It's the home of the long shafts. ;). Mining heritage JK. :) Mollers 30 November 2005, 16:35 i get the drift!!! :) Drifting would be quicker!! :D Hugh Jardon 30 November 2005, 17:37 yours might be a long shaft but some folks have extra long shafts!!;) Cheeky minx :p You need to slip on down to Cornwall, It's the home of the long shafts. ;). Mining heritage JK. :) Mollers 30 November 2005, 17:47 yours might be a long shaft but some folks have extra long shafts!!;) Ah, but it's not the length of the shaft, it's the width. More width, bigger lifts greater productivity! :D Hugh Jardon 30 November 2005, 17:48 so you saying my seagull is not up to much then? Ah, but it's not the length of the shaft, it's the width. Only if you can tie a rope around it's leg and get it to give you a tow!! :D Hugh Jardon 30 November 2005, 18:14 are we back on the skyrats theme again?;) Only if you can tie a rope around it's leg and get it to give you a tow!! :D timboli 01 December 2005, 05:05 A yamaha 2 hp will get you from a-b slowly but use very little fuel and is very light. Strangely enough,a 2.5 mariner feels almost twice as powerful, planing potential on a 3m rib one up if you sit forward,I used a length of washing machine pipe to steer.Sounds a bit sad but does reduce your trip time on the 5th trip to a boat ferrying kit, dog, family, food for just a weekend trip. Rodan 01 December 2005, 08:32 Seaguls make fantastic anchors and as a bonus you can strap it to the back of the boat again sfterwards and the damn thing will still work (probably...). Searider 01 December 2005, 08:57 Borrowed a mates 2hp Evinrude and added it to my one on the back of a 9' hard dinghy. Sounded horrendous but felt like a pilot boat - semi-displacement. Was also rigged for sailing and so had to plug the centreboard casing as well. Went better with a Yamaha 4hp steered with a length of 1.5" waste pipe. |
