John Kennett 20 September 2005, 21:25 Does anyone know where I can get a replacement battery pack for a Navico Axis handheld VHF?
I've emailed Simrad, who bought Navico a while back; and found one place on-line www.yachtbits.com that have them (for £75 inc carriage!)
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
John
codprawn 21 September 2005, 02:15 probably your best bet is to open it up and change the cells - I most certainly would at that price!!!
John Kennett 21 September 2005, 07:34 I pulled it apart last night to check if that's an option. As expected it does use AA size cells, so it should be a fairly simple job.
On the other hand, do I want to find that my VHF fails when I most need it because of a dodgy bit of penny pinching soldering?

Simon B 21 September 2005, 09:09 JK,
Have a look at these 2;
Euro Batteries (http://www.eurobatteries.com/)
Global Batteries (http://www.global-batteries.co.uk/)
There are small companies who specialise in re-packing and are usually quite reasonable.
John Kennett 21 September 2005, 09:46 Euro seem to have a good range. If I did decide to rebuild the battery pack I could go up to a massive 3500 mAh! :)

Just do it and stop fekkin about.
:D
A nice chunky, hot soldering bit, tin both the battery end and the wee bits of cable you'll need to make up. Whap them together fast... don't linger and heat up the whole battery. Easy.
codprawn 21 September 2005, 12:53 I usually abrade the ends of the cells with a file or similar - makes tinning them easier - unless they are designed to be soldered.

Wonder if they're selling many!

John Kennett 28 September 2005, 12:26 There's quite a range of waterproof VHFs available for not much more than £100 now.
When I bought the Axis it was pretty much the only waterproof handheld available. Its performance is excellent, but it's big and heavy. May well be time for a change . . .

That will be the good old Standard then :D
Worth paying a bit more for Lithium-Ion though :D
Wont need the spare AA cell case then.
